The New Jersey Law Librarians Association invites our Membership to participate in our first ever Virtual Annual Business Meeting.

The teleconference will be held via WebEx on Friday, June 19, 2020 at 12:00 noon (EDT).

You can RSVP by emailing NJLLA Treasurer Kathy Taggart at ktaggart@lowenstein.com. You do not have to RSVP again if you have already done so. Attendees will receive a link and password prior to the meeting. The RSVP deadline is Thursday, June 18th at 5 pm.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:
Natalya G. Johnson, Esq., Riker Danzig Scherer Hyland Perretti, LLP

Alnisa Bell, Esq., Seyfarth Shaw LLP   

Natalya Johnson is a Labor & Employment attorney at Riker Danzig Scherer Hyland Perretti, LLP.  Natalya’s practices focuses on the representation and counsel of management in employment-related matters. She counsels clients on matters including restrictive covenants, discrimination, and retaliation cases. Natalya is also a frequent speaker at various continuing legal education seminars. She earned her J.D. degree from Cornell Law School and her B.A. degree, magna cum laude, from Cornell University. 

Alnisa Bell is a Labor & Employment attorney at Seyfarth Shaw LLP. Alnisa represents employers in single-plaintiff and multi-plaintiff discrimination and retaliation cases, as well as has significant ERISA experience. Not only is she a skilled litigator, but Alnisa also counsels employers on compliance with state and federal laws. Alnisa serves as counsel in several high-profile litigations across the country relating to the #MeToo movement and speaks regularly on gender equity and diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Alnisa earned her J.D. from Rutgers School of Law and her B.A. degree, magna cum laude, from Bryn Mawr College.

April Meeting: Identifying Fake News and Managing Its Effects with Dr. Asta Zelenkauskaite and Pablo Molina 🗓

Expert speakers specializing in Mass Communication and Information Security will discuss what fake news is, how it is created, and best practices for curbing its effects. This is a must-see program for anyone who has any responsibilities for curation, dissemination, or analysis of information.

Dr. Asta Zelenkauskaite

Asta Zelenkauskaite earned her PhD in Mass Communication from Indiana University, Bloomington with two minor specializations in Information Science and Linguistics. She is an Assistant Professor of Communication at Drexel University. Her research focuses upon the intersection between social media and mass media, analyzing the user-generated content contributions of social media users, their content selection practices, and the value extraction through theoretical frameworks of interactivity, gatekeeping, and Big Data. She has an extensive record of collaborations with computer scientists and information science scholars.

Pablo Molina

Pablo Molina serves as Drexel’s Chief Information Security Officer, charged with planning and implementing cybersecurity policy across the university. He has an extensive background in ethics of technology and information management and he regularly comments on stories about privacy, ethics of tech companies, and laws related to technology and information management. He has written extensively on technology and information management and is a regular speaker at conferences related to technology, education and policy, and has presented to the United Nations, the American Bar Association, the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute and others.

November Meeting: International Legal Research in the 21st Century with Jootaek Lee 🗓

International Legal Research in the 21st Century

Jootaek Lee, JD, MLS, MA

Mr. Lee will explain the international legal system, its origins and history, and how to effectively approach international legal issues. He will demonstrate cost-effective internet research strategies and will introduce attendees to a variety of reliable online databases. He will address various topics, such as human rights, international environmental law, the law of the sea and international trade.

Jootaek Lee is a reference librarian and assistant professor at Rutgers Law School. He is also an affiliated faculty member of the Program of Human Rights and Global Economy and a consulting expert at WaterLex. He had been a foreign, comparative, and international law librarian for more than seven years at Northeastern University School of Law. He is also a prolific author and scholar. His research focuses on human rights to land, water and education, the Asian practice of international law, especially human rights and international criminal law, legal informatics, Korean law, legal education and pedagogy in law. He has made numerous presentations at national and international conferences.

NJ SLA Event: “From Crypto to Data – What Librarians Need to Know About Blockchain” with Debbie Ginsberg 🗓

You’ve heard the hype: Blockchain will either revolutionize the Internet or will fizzle out by the end of 2019. The reality is both more practical and more pervasive than the hype suggests. Blockchains and related technologies will change how we track data.

Debbie Ginsberg is the Educational Technology Librarian at Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago – Kent College of Law. Debbie has given technology presentations for the American Association of Law Libraries and the Special Libraries Association Annual Conference. She has also written numerous articles on legal technology. Debbie will explain the foundations of Blockchain as well as demonstrate how important this technology will be to librarians in the upcoming decade.

Panelists from Rutgers Law School, Prudential Insurance, and McCarter & English will talk about the Pro Bono initiatives at their organizations. They will discuss their philosophical approach, how people volunteer, and the connection with Continuing Legal Education. They will also address ways in which the law library can participate in and encourage their work.

Susan Feathers is the Assistant Dean for Pro Bono and Public Interest at Rutgers Newark Law School. During her time at Rutgers, Feathers has assisted in developing a range of public interest initiatives, including public interest career counseling, service-learning, and public interest fellowships.

Jack Lerner, the chair of the Pro Bono group at Prudential Insurance, is a lawyer with Prudential’s Enterprise Litigation Group. He provides litigation advice for the Annuities and Retirement Businesses and also advises all parts of the firm on antitrust and attorney-client privilege issues.

Michelle Movahed is the Pro Bono Director at McCarter & English. She is responsible for managing the Pro Bono Program in a manner that strategically and effectively implements the Firm’s commitment to providing free legal services to those who cannot afford them, in addition to supporting the Firm’s attorneys in their pro bono work and carrying her own caseload.
