ADDITIONAL NOMINATIONS:

The Nominating Committee solicits the membership for input during the selection process and it is deemed that the nominees presented are the candidates of the membership. However, any member in good standing in the Association may make additional nominations by petition. The member must contact the President at least 30 days prior to the annual meeting, submitting the petition in writing, endorsed with the signatures of at least 10 other members, as specified in Article IX, Section 1 (c) of the Association’s bylaws.

ELECTIONS:

The New Jersey Law Librarians Association welcomes speaker Ellen C. Marshall, Esq., for our April 4th luncheon event. Plus, please save the date for NJLLA’s annual meeting and 30th anniversary celebration! It will be held on May 11 at the New Jersey Historical Society in Newark. More details to come.

NJLLA APRIL 2017 MEETING

The Changing Face of Family Law
Ellen C. Marshall, Esq. 

Families have changed, economic regulations impacting those newly in the workforce have become more stringent, even case law has begun to evolve to recognize these sometimes seismic shifts.  Society’s expectations of divorce, however, have not always kept pace with legal, economic and sociological realties.

The impact of children spending more time with caregivers and teachers than parents; changes brought about in conjunction with recognizing the LGBTQ community; new custodial and economic demands of divorcing families; new challenges for borrowers and lenders and other social, legal and financial challenges of the 21st century will be discussed in this luncheon program. 

Ellen C. Marshall practiced Family Law for almost 26 years, after a career in social service. A graduate of Seton Hall University School of Law, Ellen also holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology. Appointed by courts as guardian ad litem in complex custody cases, Ellen’s practice focused on high net worth families and high conflict custody cases. Ellen currently teaches as adjunct faculty at Raritan Valley Community College.

2017 AALL Annual Meeting Grant

Wanting go to the 110th AALL Annual Meeting & Conference in Austin, TX, July 15-18 and need some financial assistance to attend? Then the Annual Meeting Grant is for you.

The Annual Meeting Grant Awards Jury is seeking applications for the AALL Annual Meeting Grant Award. The deadline to apply is April 1, 2017. Additional information about the award as well as the application can be found at: Annual Meeting Grant Awards.

The AALL Grants Program provides financial assistance to experienced law librarians who are actively involved in AALL or its chapters and to newer law librarians or graduate students who hold promise of future involvement in AALL and the law library profession. Funds are provided by AALL, AALL individual members, and vendors.

An applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be considered for the award:

  • be a member or student member of AALL or an AALL chapter;
  • not have received a grant in the past three years; and
  • submit a timely and complete application.

However, a breakdown of the basics of tax law authority and tax law research can demystify this process. This session will also include navigation tips for Checkpoint, Bloomberg BNA and other tax specialty sources.

AALL Model Law Firm Copyright Policy and Guidance Document

AALL Model Law Firm Copyright Policy and Guidance Document have been finalized and are available on AALLNET.   

Patricia Barbone, Director of Library Services at Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP, passed on the following information about the Model Policy:

I am pleased to announce that the AALL Model Law Firm Copyright Policy has been updated and posted on AALLnet. The AALL Board approved the new update at their last board meeting on April 8th, 2016. 

As stated on the website, AALL’s Model Law Firm Copyright Policy is a model of a copyright policy and will require revision to fit the specific needs of your law firm. Your firm’s General Counsel or Intellectual Property attorneys should review the policy before it is adopted. The Model Policy should be read in conjunction with the Model Law Firm Copyright Guidance Document. The Guidance Document provides clarification and insight into copyright law and more nuanced aspects of the policy. The Guidance Document should also be revised to meet the needs of your law firm. Should your firm adopt a copyright policy, it will require revision if laws change.

The policy was updated under the auspices of the AALL Copyright Committee. Many people contributed to this three year endeavor to update the Model Law Firm Copyright Policy.  An early task force of private law librarians helped to share their copyright pain points; then the membership was surveyed on copyright concerns via the Private Law Librarians & Information Professionals SIS communities list. Several librarians shared their existing firm copyright policies with Carolyn and me.

Fellow Copyright Committee member Carolyn Hersch (Ropes & Gray) and I reviewed the survey to find issues that members needed addressed in a revised policy. Then the work of drafting began. We were assisted by Kelly Leong (UCLA School of Law), Pam Brannon (Georgia State University College of Law), as well as my firm’s General Counsel, James B. Kobak, and Intellectual Property attorney, Genevieve Perez. Thanks also go out to our AALL Board liaison Emily Florio (Finnegan) for getting some last minute updates approved by the Board.  To everyone who was a part of this process, I offer my thanks and gratitude.
