Law Libraries Spurn Sizable Publisher Sponsorship

Thomson-West, the staple supplier of resources for law librarians, for the first time in recent memory wasn’t a gold sponsor ($75,000+) at the recent American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) annual meeting, July 10-13, in Denver.

The reason? Not because of budget cutbacks. According to Joe Hodnicki, an editor of the Law Librarian Blog (LLB), AALL’s executive board decided not to accept any sponsorship dollars from Thomson-West. At issue is West’s refusal to provide pricing information for AALL’s annual Price Index for Legal Publications (available to AALL members only).

Library at Rutgers Law School–Newark Awarded Grant for Preservation of Old and Rare Legal Books and Documents

The Law Library at Rutgers School of Law–Newark has received a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences (IMLS) that will help preserve old and rare books in its collections for future generations. IMLS will donate to Rutgers a core set of conservation books and online resources designated the IMLS Connecting to Collections Bookshelf. Among the library’s holdings in need of preservation and care are manuscripts and books in the U.S. Supreme Court Justice Joseph P. Bradley (1870–1892) collection, Garden State Bar Association archives, National Bar Association archives, and some rare books such as those on English law dating back to the 16th century.

New Jersey State Bar Association Provides Free Legal Research with Fastcase

New Jersey lawyers can now access the complete New Jersey law library online by visiting the NJSBA website, www.njsba.com, Members now get for free – as a part of their NJSBA membership – services that previously cost thousands of dollars per lawyer each year.

Law Library of Congress Website On The Constitution

The Law Library of Congress has added a new website about the Constitution that includes sections on Constitutional Interpretation, Executive Privilege, Military Tribunals, Presidential Inherent Powers, Presidential Signing Statements, The Second Amendment, State Secrets Privelege, War Powers, War Powers Resolution, and Additional Constitutional Resources.

AALL Opposes Repeal of Public Access Bill

Several law associations, including the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL), oppose the introduction The Fair Copyright in Research Works Act, H.R. 801, which would repeal the NIH Public Access Policy and prevent other federal agencies from enacting similar open access policies.
